Luke Cage
TV · 2016
Luke Cage, an escaped convict made unbreakable by a prison experiment, lays low in Harlem until the shooting of his mentor Pop pulls him into a war with the crime boss Cornell "Cottonmouth" Stokes. Cottonmouth's cousin, the councilwoman Mariah Dillard, kills him in a rage and, with her fixer Shades, pins the blame on Luke, then teams up with Luke's vengeful half-brother Willis Stryker, who has become the armoured Diamondback. Luke defeats Diamondback and Mariah is cleared of suspicion and reopens Harlem's Paradise with Shades, but the season closes with federal marshals arresting Luke over his escape from prison. By the time of the second season, which follows The Defenders, his name has been cleared and he is a local celebrity, while Misty Knight has lost an arm and wears a prosthetic. Bushmaster, a Jamaican gangster seeking vengeance on the Stokes family for the double-cross that killed his mother and grandfather, sets out to destroy Mariah's empire while Luke tries to protect Harlem and rebuilds his bond with his father. Luke defeats Bushmaster and takes over Harlem's Paradise as the neighbourhood's self-appointed guardian, while Mariah is poisoned by her own daughter Tilda, who had been swayed by Bushmaster.
