Young mutant Danielle "Dani" Moonstar wakes in a remote hospital facility after her Cheyenne reservation is destroyed by a mysterious force, and finds herself the newest patient under the supervision of Dr. Cecilia Reyes alongside four other teenage mutants still learning to control their powers: Rahne Sinclair, Sam Guthrie, Illyana Rasputin, and Roberto da Costa. As Dani's own ability begins to manifest, it drags each of them into visions that manifest their deepest personal traumas and fears. The group gradually uncovers that Reyes is secretly holding them for the shadowy Essex Corporation rather than treating them, and that Dani's power may be responsible for conjuring a monstrous Demon Bear tied to the destruction of her home. Banding together, the young mutants confront their fears and Reyes's true agenda in order to break free of the facility. Framed as a horror-tinged coming-of-age story, the film was designed to stand apart from the wider X-Men saga while still being set within its continuity.
