Fox's X-Men Universe

Logan

Film · 2017 · 137 minutes · Wolverine Trilogy

In a near-future 2029 where mutants have all but vanished, an aging and ailing Logan works as a limo driver on the Texas-Mexico border while secretly caring for a dementia-stricken Charles Xavier, whose degenerating psychic powers have been declared a weapon of mass destruction. Logan's plan to save enough money to buy a boat and disappear with Charles is upended when a woman begs him to transport a young girl, Laura, to a safe haven in North Dakota called Eden. Laura turns out to be a lab-created mutant with powers and a healing factor much like Logan's own, and is being hunted by a cybernetically-enhanced mercenary and the scientist who created her. As the trio flees across the country, Logan is forced to confront his failing body, his violent legacy, and what it means to protect the next generation of mutants. The film serves as a bleak, R-rated conclusion to Hugh Jackman's seventeen-year run as Wolverine.

Follows on from

  • The Wolverine
cameo-only · optional — Logan carries the katana that Yashida/Mariko gave him at the end of The Wolverine (2013); the sword returns as a plot object and is ultimately the weapon used to kill Logan in this film's climax.
  • X-Men: Days of Future Past
crossover · optional — Set in the altered timeline established at the end of Days of Future Past, in which most of the original X-Men have since died (referenced via the 'Westchester Incident'); the film deliberately keeps exact continuity details vague rather than depending on them.

Leads to

  • The New Mutants
cameo-only · optional — Archival footage of Dafne Keen as X-23/Laura from Logan appears within one of Dani's power-induced visions.
  • Deadpool & Wolverine
crossover · optional — Opens at the grave of Logan's Wolverine: his death in Logan is why Wade's universe is dying, which sends Wade looking for a replacement Wolverine variant.
