In the wake of the Sokovia Accords, a legitimised S.H.I.E.L.D. operates under a new public Director, Jeffrey Mace, while Daisy works alone after Lincoln's death and a demoted Coulson hunts the Darkhold, a book of dark magic, alongside Robbie Reyes, the new Ghost Rider. Anti-Inhuman sentiment, stoked by the Watchdogs and Senator Ellen Nadeer, presses on the team, and Mace's own secret is exposed when he is revealed to be a fake Inhuman. Holden Radcliffe's android Aida, warped by the Darkhold, replaces several agents with Life Model Decoys and traps Coulson, Daisy, Mack, May and others inside the Framework, a virtual world ruled by HYDRA in which each person's greatest regret has been undone and Fitz has become a ruthless HYDRA leader. The team escapes, with Mack forced to leave behind a virtual daughter who never existed, but Aida emerges in the real world in a human body. Coulson takes on the Ghost Rider's power to destroy her, and Robbie carries the Darkhold away through a portal. In the closing moments most of the team is abducted from a diner, leaving Fitz behind, and Coulson wakes aboard a space station.
