Riri Williams is unsettled by N.A.T.A.L.I.E., the AI she has accidentally built using data modeled on her late friend Natalie, and scrambles to keep it hidden — only for the construct to slip free and reveal itself directly to her mother Ronnie, who Riri and NATALIE then have to fully explain themselves to. Meanwhile Riri blackmails a meek underground tech dealer, Joe McGillicuddy, into supplying the components she needs to rebuild her armor. Parker "The Hood" Robbins sends Riri and the crew on their first job: infiltrating TNNL, a company converting Chicago's old freight tunnels, to plant a virus in the CEO's mainframe as blackmail leverage. The heist crew includes Clown, who handles the explosives, and the Blood siblings, who neutralize security. The plan nearly collapses when NATALIE glitches mid-heist and a guard corners the crew; a stray bullet ricochets off Riri's armor and wounds the guard, and Parker reveals he was the one who actually fired the shot from behind her. NATALIE, thematically shaken by having been modeled on a friend killed by gun violence, is left distressed that someone was hurt in the escape.
