Taloa — S01E04
TV · 2024 · 38 minutes · Phase Five
A 2008 flashback shows young Maya and Fisk at a fair, where a vendor mocks Maya for using ASL rather than understanding her deafness; Fisk brutally beats the vendor, and Maya kicks him too, foreshadowing the violence she absorbed from him as a surrogate father. A 2021 flashback shows Fisk completing Maya's training and having her ASL interpreter killed, telling her that the two of them can only trust each other. In the present, Fisk has his men bring Maya to him in Tamaha; he gives her a translating contact lens so they can speak without an interpreter and offers to hand her his entire criminal empire if she returns with him to New York, giving her one day to decide. Maya's grandmother Chula tells her about a vision she received while giving birth to Maya's mother, Taloa, insisting their ancestors help their family when it's needed most — but Maya, feeling abandoned by Chula growing up, storms off angry. That night Maya goes to Fisk's hotel room intending to kill him; he admits he murdered his own abusive father and dares her to go through with it, but she can't. He renews his offer to take her to New York, only to wake the next morning to find Maya has already left Tamaha without him.
