Deadpool

Film · 2016 · 108 minutes · Deadpool

Mercenary Wade Wilson is diagnosed with terminal cancer and agrees to an underground experimental treatment run by the sadistic Ajax (Francis), hoping it will cure him. The procedure tortures Wade into activating a latent mutation that gives him rapid healing powers, but it also leaves him horrifically scarred, and Ajax abandons him for dead. Adopting the masked, wisecracking persona Deadpool, Wade hunts for Ajax to force him to reverse the disfigurement, reluctantly aided by X-Men members Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead. When Ajax kidnaps Wade's girlfriend Vanessa and uses her as bait, Deadpool and his allies storm a scrapyard where Ajax and his enforcer Angel Dust are holding her aboard a decommissioned helicarrier, leading to a climactic battle in which Deadpool rescues Vanessa and kills Ajax after learning there was never a cure. The film is a violent, fourth-wall-breaking, R-rated origin story told out of chronological order, deliberately parodying traditional superhero conventions.

Follows on from

  • X-Men Origins: Wolverine
cameo-only · optional — Deadpool repeatedly breaks the fourth wall to mock X-Men Origins: Wolverine's version of the character (jokes about his mouth being sewn shut, an action-figure gag, and the 'Pulverine' line), directly referencing that film's portrayal rather than merely sharing a character.

Leads to

  • Deadpool 2
direct-sequel — Continues directly from the first film: Wade Wilson, now an established mercenary/vigilante with Vanessa, Colossus, and Negasonic Teenage Warhead all returning, picks up his story after the events of Deadpool.
